May 29, 2011· As alunite suggests acid solutions, Ramsome considered that magmatic alkaline solutions with H 2 S were oxidized near the surface, supplying sulfuric acid that caused the alunitic alteration; the mingling of surficial acid waters and ascending waters caused near-surface precipitation of the gold.

Mineral Occurrence - RELATED INFORMATION

ALUNITIC: ALUN: Introduction of, or replacement by, ALUNITE. This alteration is caused by extreme hydrolytic leaching of wallrocks in the presence of sulphate. The conditions are oxidizing with an abundance of sulphate ions. The most common mineral assemblage is ALUNITE with some form of silica: QUARTZ, CHALCEDONY, CRISTOBALITE, TRIDYMITE, or OPAL.

The main alteration zone is bounded on the south side by a greater than 120 metre wide hornblende-feldspar porphyry dike. A narrow zone of hematitic quartz breccia at the contact of the dike and the alunitic alteration zone contains anomalous gold.

Gold is usually found in association with areas affected by silicification, or in zones where processes of alunitic or jarositic alteration have occurred. Sulphur is closely related to hydrothermal alteration processes in the presence of jarosite or alunite-type sulphates and is therefore associated to mineralisation of gold.

The Miocene-aged Alta and Kate Peak Formations, of andesitic composition, dominate the surface geology in this study area. These formations have been subjected to extensive argillic, alunitic, and propylitic hydrothermal alteration, which is commonly associated with deposits containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, molybdenum, tungsten, and mercury.

Geology and K-Ar geochronology of the Paradise Peak Mine ...

Silicic and alunitic alteration and precious metal mineralization are generally absent in areas of low-angle faulting.Regional stratigraphic relations and K-Ar ages indicate that volcanism changed from silicic ash-flow tuffs to intermediate lavas at about 20 to 19 Ma.

The Taseko Property is underlain by Upper Cretaceous Kingsvale Group andesite flows and pyroclastics intercalated with lesser amounts of sedimentary rocks including argillite and conglomerate. Widespread zones of intense silicification, advanced argillic and alunitic alteration occur on the property.

A series of siliceous ridges which trend over 3 kilometres, with high sulphidation vuggy silica textures and acidic steam vents that outcrop for 1,000 metres. Geochemically anomalous rock samples with Sb, As, Hg, Bi, Mo are coincident with classic epithermal alteration zones (alunitic, silicification, argillic and propylitic) (Figures 3-6).

alteration cells were formed in shallow, steam-dominated hydrothermal environments in which the near-surface oxidation of hypogene H 2S is the principal factor controlling mineralization. The cells exhibit strong horizontal and vertical zonation. Horizontal zonation in the cells is concentric in pattern and grades outwards from an alunitic core
